TITLE : DevelopmeIlt of Controlled Polllnation Techniques
for Acacia senegal and Ziziphus mauritiana
1. SCOPE AN0 OBJECTIVES
Ziziphus mauritiana (fruit production) in the ar!.d an3 ;2:!d semi ari. zones
of Senegal, gave he species high priorities for genetjc resenrches,
'I'ilil s , tree improver3ent programs bave been tdevelorj<%d ii~v~lvi~~g the
following
activities : studies of naturai
var,iatioil and selection,
seed orchard management, hybridizationand vegctative, propagation.
For Acacia Senegal and Ziziphusmauritiana, range -wide ?rove:lance /
Progeny tests arc underway to provide the basis for st!lec tj.n$ seed ::our-
ces, andelite trees which
then cari be tailored, through h:~b~-/dizant ion
and selection, to meetspecific
needs (increased productiv%ty and :!~a-
lity, resistance to insect and disease,
jyes-&t$ncc t0 dradc*3:1'
-SD--- tolep;-irc
to salinity,... ). However, hybridization, which is a key issue in -1
CL. 1
tree improvement programs,
is largely dependent u,on the reproductive
systems, of the species. Th8r:zfore,
it is required tounderstand the
reproductive strategies of forest species to develop efficient tech-
niques of con-trolled sollination.
Since for Acacia senegaland
Ziziphu S Iilauri~i2.lla little is !ir;C;m
about their reproductive systems,
the objectives of this research pi-o-
ject are :
1.
TO determine their flowering CharactcristIcs aiid 2hysiologice1.
mechanisms of fertilization and fructification ;
2.
TO develop techniques of controllcd poilir:aj:i.on.

This project research Will psovidc basic knowlcdge
about floral ph.enolog:iZ
pollination, pollinator agents and fertilization mechani.sms of Acacia senegal and
Ziziphus mauritiana. This information will be used to develop
efficient ColItl-Olltd
pollination systems providing individunls of know parentage and ners genetic
variation as well as information on compatibility mechahisms of the species.
